Sendero los Quetzales and Las Rocas

January 4th found us a little adventurous. We decided to go for a "little" walk on the Quetzal Trail which goes from Cerro Punta to Boquete. For those of you unfamiliar with Panamá, we are talking basically about two different sides of Mount Baru. This trail, however does not go over the "top". It sort of skirts along the north slope. Somehow I had gotten into my head that distance from the ranger station (where we parked the truck) was 1 kilometer to the look out point known as Las Rocas. When we got back to the truck we were petty well ragged out and a brief consultation with the park ranger explained why. Las Rocas is about 3.7 kilometers in on the trail. That's around trip of about 4.6 miles. And suffice it to say, there are a few ups and downs along the trail.

This is the ranger's station where our trek began and ended.

This view is looking back down towards Cerro Punta.

These pretty wild flowers come into bloom during the dry season.

The trail beginning. The little sign to the left advises that the trail is solely for foot traffic; no animals nor motorized vehicles.

THis a close up of one of those flowers seen above.

This a fairly representative view of the trail.

Sometimes, small things have tremendous beauty.

This si a view of an overhead cliff with vegetation growing up and around it.

This view is from Las Rocas. If the clouds weren't present, the Pacific Ocean would be visible in the background. Boquete lies down in the valley running below beyond the ridge in the center.
