Sunday October 23, came and we headed off down the hill towards the Pan American Highway. Along the way, we made a detour to pass through Sortova. From there it was on to the Pacific Ocean and the resort, Las Olas, at playa Barqueta.

This is a bamboo house in the vicinity of Sortova. I think bamboo was used because it's inexpensive compared to other materials and also provides a natural ventilation to the dwelling.

Violet stands on a Bailey bridge across a river. This type of bridge is frequently seen in Panama. Many were constructed by the U.S. Army.

A view of the river through the trees

Clothes get washed in the river. A little guy told me that water service was down. So a little improvisation gets the laundry clean.

Water from the river works around the rocks.

We found this mud oven on one of the back roads leading to Playa Barqueta.

This turtle and several of his family live in a pond at Las Olas Resort..

Violet checks out the seating in the patio area adjacent to the pool bar.

Playa Barqueta with Costa Rica off in the far distance.

This scenic view can be deceptive. There are strong rip currents in the water.

The view to the east towards David shows some of the barrier islands in the distance.

The view up the beach to the west shows a development called Barqueta Nice.

Some of the accommodations at Las Olas.

The second pool with pool side bar at right.

One last look at the beach. Day passes are available for Las Olas Resort at about $25 a day.

A stop at this restaurant on the way back cured hunger pangs with roast pork with rice, plantains, potato salad, and substantial bowl of San Cocho. Violet had a glass of fresh o.j. Total tab: $7.75 for two.
